Works in progress

Cowslip Beanie Style in Noro Yuzen

Oh, it can feel as if it will take forever for spring to arrive, and then, suddenly, spring has turned to a hot, muggy summer, and it feels difficult to pick up (let alone work with) anything wooly!  So, I’m happy that I finished my Jane Thornley-inspired Free-Range Wrap (based on her Green Before the Gold wrap recipe, which you can find here.  Knitting this wrap at the same time I was working to get this blog set-up helped to inspire the whole look of this site. (Thank you, Jane!)  In fact on the right of the banner above you can see a wee detail shot of the wrap-in-progress.

Have you ever noticed that getting the creational flow in one area sets off similar flows in other parts of your life?  It works that way for me …so when inspiration soared, while knitting the wrap and (finally!) getting this blog together, I found myself wanting to suddenly organize my yarn room, start cooking some favorite recipes I haven’t made for years, plant a bunch of perennials…you get the idea. read more…

Welcome to caraKnits!

Hello and welcome to caraKnits, and thanks for stopping by.

It feels wonderful to finally be able to get going with this space for sharing musings, photos, and patterns about all things knitting (and related creative activity.) I’m still working at getting everything organized, and learning the WordPress interface, so it may be a while yet until I fully have it together here!

My knitting is my primary creative outlet for expressing my love of the natural world in tangible form.  And, while I do a lot of more ‘tech-driven’ knitting at times (lace shawls, or cabled or bramble stitch work), I really tend to be more of a renegade.  You know, one of those who changes just about every pattern in some way or other, no matter how beautiful the original is.  I do love exploring with colors and textures, and taking risks here and there, but I also love the sheer relaxation that can come from straight knitting (like a garter stitch scarf in beautiful yarn.) Knitting is so wonderful as a craft because it allows you so much variety in exploration — there are endless things one can do with two sticks and string.  The biggest challenge of all for me is not to have too many projects going at once! Sound familiar?

I hope you’ll drop by caraKnits now and again to see what Cara’s knitting. :)

Here is a view from my deck – where I love to sit and knit!
